Saving Gorillas from Extinction!

Congo has created a new national park aiming to prevent extinction of gorillas and other animals that are close to extinction.

The new park is named Ogooué-Leketi National Park and is located in the savannah transition zone and covers 860,000 acres. Because of its location it offers great biodiversity and is home to multiple species such as mandrills, forest elephants, forest buffalos, gorillas, orangutans, and a diverse plant population.

The creation of this park is great because in 1978 the gorilla population reached an all time low 240, and was thought to be extinct by the year 2000. Due to great efforts made by conservationists, the population rose to 600 moving them from the “critically endangered” category, to “endangered.”

This success story proves the possibility of bringing many species moving towards extinction out of that, and improving their population.

I love hearing positive stories such of this one since it restores my faith in humanity and shows that there isn’t always bad news being shared.
